CHAPTER 18

Carinna

It was dark by the time we pulled up to my apartment building. As I reached to unbuckle my seat belt, I saw Maxim do the same. “I don’t suppose you’re just going to walk me to the door.”

He raised an eyebrow, then got out of the car without saying a word. He circled around and opened my door and helped me out before popping the trunk and pulling out a black duffle bag. He placed a hand on my lower back as we walked toward my building.

“You seem like you’re a pretty rich guy. Why aren’t you staying at a hotel or something?”

He held open the outside door for me. “I hate hotels.”

“So that’s what this is all about? You’re with me for a free place to crash because you don’t like hotels?” I asked as I walked down the corridor to my apartment.

“Not dislike. Hate. The idea of sleeping in a bed hundreds, if not thousands, of other men have slept in does not appeal to me.”

I raised an eyebrow and flashed him a cheeky grin. “How do you know that isn’t the case with my bed?”

Dropping his duffle bag, he pressed me against the wall just outside my apartment. He placed his forearms on either side of my head, caging me in. “If I thought that for one second, moya malen’kaya iskra, I would be very busy killing every man on that list. Besides, you forget. I’ve been inside that tight pussy of yours. It’s all highway.”

My brow furrowed. “All highway?”

“Like a car, it’s only been driven on the easy highway streets. No off-roading or rough treatment.”

“Not until you came along,” I mumbled as I crossed my arms under my chest. “I’m not sure I enjoy being compared to a car.”

He backed up a step and raised his arm in the air as he covered his heart with his other hand. “Mogu ya sravnit' tebya letnim dnom? Ty mileye i ravneye: Burnyye vetera tryasut lyubimyye mayskiye pochki i leto slishkom korotkoye.”

Before I could ask him what he was saying, he leaned over me, pressing his hips into mine. His lips caressed my mouth as he recited Shakespeare’s Sonnet Eighteen. “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer’s lease hath all too short a date.”

I rolled my eyes. “Great, a Russian gangster who quotes Shakespeare. Every girl’s dream boyfriend.”

Maxim laughed as he picked up his duffle bag and turned to unlock the door.

I pressed my palms to my hips and then looked around me as if my backpack and purse would magically appear. “Oh, no! I left my things at the school. We have to go back. My phone’s in there. Maybe the night janitor will let us in.”

Maxim opened the door with the key he took from me earlier and gestured for me to walk inside. “It is being taken care of.”

“What does that mean?”

“That means I called one of my men and they are in the process of getting your things from the school.
